Worst IPO Market For Venture-Backed Companies in 30 Years
Early-stage companies that have raised venture capital to fund their operations -- known as venture-backed companies -- have just been handed some pretty bleak news. Not a single venture-backed company had an initial public offering (IPO) during the second quarter of 2008. According to an , this is the first time that has happened since 1978. Without the typical IPO exit, that means venture firms will be pulling back on their rates of funding as they will want to keep "dry powder" for their portfolio companies that need follow-on investments rather than go public. It also means venture capitalists will write off and abandon marginal investments to concentrate more of their efforts on their better performing companies. All in all -- until the IPO market returns -- venture capital will be even more elusive for the average entrepreneur.
