Equipping Sons: A Father's Job

We all desire to equip our sons for the future; to equip them to be good leaders, protectors and providers.  A big question among the faithful remnant is "how best to equip them?"  Is it a formal academic program?  Is a mentorship program?  Is it online classes?  As I've written about before, I think the correct answer is to create an entrepreneurial training roadmap that includes all of these and more with a focus on learning the cogent skills that will be used over and over again.  The primary focus in equipping sons should be on skills acquisition and not simply getting a degree (but it could certainly include getting a degree.)

One of the most powerful ways for a young man to learn is to be mentored rather than sitting in a classroom.  But what I have noticed in my travels and my interactions with young entrepreneurs is that the most powerful mentoring comes from the father, not other men.  Even if the father does not have all the skills he needs to pass along to his son and he seeks other equipping opportunities, the father still needs to take the lead role in equipping and preparing his son.  There simply is no substitute for the father to lead in this regard.

A few examples of fathers equipping their sons through various means include the stories of one young man that took over the family business at only 18 years old (click here, here and
here for the full story) and includes young men such as Michael Fowl, whose father took him to work at his software job, the Rugloski brothers, who are in business with their father and Chad Roach who learned valuable sales and customer service experience working shoulder-to-shoulder with his father.

Do you have a story of your own to tell about how you led the preparation of your son or how your father led your preparation?  Simply leave a comment on this post or click here to send us an email or consider filling out a profile.  We would love to hear your encouraging stories to share with others.
