Five-Year-Old Has First Brush With Entrepreneurship

There was a recent news story in the U.K. about a young boy and his invention:

A five-year-old boy has given entrepreneurs a run for their money, after he became the youngest ever holder of a patent in the UK.

Sam Houghton’s invention is called the ‘Improved Broom’, and consists of two brooms strapped together with a rubber band.

“It was such a simple solution that only a child could have come up with it,” said Sam’s proud dad, Mark. “I was swapping from one broom to the other and he asked why. When I said it was to pick up the different leaves and twigs it must have got him thinking.

“He got a large elastic band from the shed and put it over the two brooms, holding them just the right way to use them both together. He then announced that he had made up an invention,” he beamed.

Mark, a patent attorney, added that he was so impressed with his son’s entrepreneurial spirit he decided to submit a patent application, so Sam would be protected if someone else decides to copy his idea.

Mark added that Sam had been inspired by Wallace and Gromit, who are fronting the Intellectual Property Office’s (IPO) ‘Cracking Ideas’ campaign, which aims to inspire 9-11 year olds to become the inventors of the future.

Meanwhile, a realistic Sam decided not to commit to an entrepreneurial career just yet. “I don’t know if I want to be an inventor when I grow up but this was fun," he said.
