New Venture Lab: Equipping Christian Entrepreneurs

Question

I believe that we should personally avoid debt as Christians due to the bondage and potential unequal yoking. However, is it okay to issue debt as a Christian to companies in the form of bank loans? I have been blessed in my current non-lending role at a bank and I now have the opportunity to move into Commercial Lending. I would be giving out loans to middle market companies. Do you feel it is wrong to issue debt to businesses as a Christian?

Answer

While I too think it is best to avoid personal debt based upon Biblical warnings and admonitions, it is not a sin to take on debt, nor is it leading someone into sin to provide financial capital in whatever form it comes in, be it equity or debt.  One could argue that capital providers are enslaving a business when they provide capital, but I see capital rather as a tool that can be used to grow a business.  Therefore, I do not feel it is wrong to issue debt to businesses as a Christian.
