Building an IT Managed Services Business

Question

I have just started managing an IT Service company a couple months ago.  Where is the best place to start implementing some of these concepts of how to think like an entrepreneur?  I'd like to take our company to IT Managed Services, but we are so small that just servicing the help desk consumes most of the time.  How can I grow to that target?

Answer

I would suggest that you “productize” some of your services and create recurring monthly services contracts that include managing specific stuff like their corporate network, their Exchange Server, specific applications, etc.  Consider a “bronze” level of services, a “silver” level, and a “gold level, where each level has a different response time and number of hours of dedicated onsite support (if needed), use it or lose it.  You could price with a flat monthly fee plus a per-user fee for the number of employees on the network and roll in network management plus help desk.  You would charge more for a higher level of service.
