Preparing for the Worst
Question
I am interested in what Mr. Myers is doing to prepare for the coming times, like is he stockpiling food, buying gold, etc. I have great respect for him and would really like to know his advice on these issues.
Answer
As believers we should always be prepared for any contingency, whether good times or bad times. However, in many cases, the bad times are not nearly as bad as some would have us believe. Beware of those that constantly speak as if the sky is falling, the economy is collapsing, and the currency imploding. Beware of making any knee-jerk reactions based on emotionally-laced cries of doom that you may regret later.
Look to see if the bearers of bad news are profiting from their message and take it all with a grain of salt. Are they trying to sell you precious metals, survival books, bulk foods, newsletter subscriptions, conference fees, and other such resources? Then they are profiting from their message of doom.
Faith, not Fear, should be the Christian response -- along with wise decisions. Prudence would call for getting out of debt, staying out of debt, building up a rainy day fund, and seeking independence and flexibility. Independence and flexibility may include making wise investments and creating multiple sources of revenue so that you are not dependent upon a "job" that could be lost. It may also include maintaining a full pantry, a sufficient-sized garden, etc., but we should not act as frightened sheep, huddled together awaiting a slaughter. May we be as bold as lions, as wise as serpents, and as innocent as doves.
We should always plan for the worst, hope for the best, work as diligently as if we are building for the next ten generations, but relate to others as if this is our last day on earth.
And throughout it all, we should have faith and give glory to God, knowing that it is to Him that we belong. And we need to spread the Biblical message of hope and not fear, for that is the greatest treasure we can offer.
