Creating a Logo
Question
Can you offer any tips on how I go about creating a logo for my company?
Answer
There are many independent creative types that can create logos fairly quickly and easily - just Google "business logo".
You can also create one yourself, but if you do, I always recommend that you have a graphic artist "finish" it off for you in a final professional design so that it does not look homemade.
Here are a few tips I've learned over the years on logos:
-
Round or square is better - too long and narrow can be unwieldy
-
Fewer lines is better
-
Test how it looks in black and white (think faxes and black and white scanned images)
-
Test how it looks very small and very large
-
If your business name consists of two words put together, use a regular and a bold font (or regular and italics) as well as different colors to contrast the two words
-
Two-color logos lend themselves to cheaper and easier printing than three or four-color logos
-
Always be consistent with the use of your logo, colors and design scheme on all of your collateral such as business cards, PowerPoint presentations, letterhead, fax cover sheet, etc. so that your "brand" has a consistent look and feel
When you do get a logo finished, be sure to get it in the following formats to make it easier to work with later on in different media:
-
EPS
-
JPEG (regular)
-
JPEG (compressed)
-
PNG (regular)
-
PNG (compressed)
-
Also, get all versions in full-color as well as in gray scale or black and white
