Developing an Entrepreneurial Vision for Our Children

Question

I am not an entrepreneur, so I struggle with how to create a entrepreneurial family vision for my children.  What would you recommend?

Answer

An example high-level vision might be as follows:

  • Sons as highly-educated and well-trained leaders, protectors, and independent providers for their families with their hearts turned toward home and with the freedom to follow God's promptings
  • Daughters as highly-educated and well-trained helpmeets that can co-labor with their entrepreneur husbands in the family business

And, further, in accordance with the Biblical mandates of fruitfulness:

  • Spiritual fruitfulness through multi-generational faithfulness and the building of God's Kingdom
  • Family fruitfulness through accepting God's blessing of children and training them in righteousness
  • Economic fruitfulness through effectively trading with their God-given talents to be proven good stewards and provide an inheritance to their children

Even if you are not an entrepreneur, simply teaching the concepts of being an entrepreneur to your children may spark their interest enough to set their creative juices to flowing.

Read books that have characters developing businesses, if your children are young - Sara Maxwell has a series that includes an entrepreneur venture with her characters, Enoch Roden's Training is about a young man's apprenticeship, or even reading the articles Wade Myers has written in Homeschooling Today. Our oldest loves to read them on her own.

If your children come up with ideas themselves, encourage them in those things. One of the beauties of homeschooling is tailor- made curriculum to go with our children's interests. Our daughters have already had a cookie business, tried their hand at selling homemade bonnets and popsicles. The ideas are endless once they start coming.
