What skills are essential to becoming a good salesman?

Answer

There are many, but here are a few that I feel are very important:

  • Ability to listen and "read" the customer
  • Ability to probe for understanding
  • Knowledge of your products or services
  • Knowledge of your competition's products or services
  • Follow-up (simpy doing what you committed to your prospect or customer to do)
  • Empathy
  • Ability to speak, present and write clearly
  • Ability to think on your feet and answer objections
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Ability to match a need with a product or service that meets that need
